Building Thriving Communities

Bio

Steve Chalke MBE is a British minister, author, and social entrepreneur who in 1985 founded the Oasis Charitable Trust, now a group of charities operating across several countries and running schools, housing, healthcare, and community hubs, employing thousands of staff in the UK. He founded the anti-trafficking movement Stop the Traffik and served as a United Nations Special Adviser on Human Trafficking. Appointed MBE in 2004 for services to social inclusion, he has authored more than forty books and held an ecumenical canon role at Southwark Cathedral. His work centers on building thriving, inclusive communities where institutions serve human flourishing rather than narrow self-interest.

The big questions

The kind of questions this session opens up.

  1. We can build a thriving company far more easily than a thriving neighborhood. What does the company know that the neighborhood doesn’t?
  2. What does a community actually need that no market has ever figured out how to sell?
  3. If it takes a village, why have we spent a century designing economies that dismantle the village?
  4. Is belonging something you can build on purpose, or only something you can stop destroying?
